The valley is sealed off by the Cascade Vary into the northeast and with the Klamath Mountains into the northwest. While in the far north the terrain is rugged and heavily forested, turning into wetter within the coastal facet and drier and barren in the upper northeast. From the south the Central Valley is shut off because of the transverse ranges
